He claimed to be armed and threatened a security guard, demanding cash.

Police could not say what weapon the man claimed to be holding.

The man escaped with a "very small amount of cash", Inspector Paul Giovenali from Newtown local area command said.

The man left the hotel in an older model white Holden Commodore driven by another person, and was last seen heading along Broderick Street.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Newtown Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
